Songs of the Week: May 26 - June 01, 2025

June 02, 2025 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day, Songs Of The Week

“Ice Tea” by Skye Wallace

What’s your favourite summer drink and new favourite summer jam? For Skye Wallace, it’s “Ice Tea”.

Even though the Toronto singer’s previous album The Act of Living came out late last year, they’re already dropping a new single, influenced by “Old Peel” from New Zealand’s Aldous Harding (who gets a songwriting credit on the track). Skye explains: “I was desperately trying to reconnect with myself and the music I make. Listening to 'Old Peel,' I felt a spark of inspiration, a flood of lyrics and a storyline that felt important to pursue. It was like old folk singers repurposing melodies with their own newly-written words. 'Ice Tea' is my homage to the song that reawakened my creative self.”

You can watch the video (which Skye used to announce another new release coming soon), which is directed, edited, & coloured by Skye, with cinematography by Teagan Johnson, and dedicated to the memory of artist, poet, and activist jes sachse.

“Good Times” by Total Fucking Darkness

Total Fucking Darkness just wants you to have “Good Times”.

The collaboration of Torquil Campbell (Stars), Stephen Ramsay (Yougn Galaxy), and renowned producer Tom McFall have been giving us a slow drip of dopamine with their dance hits all year long, with the latest being a partially spoken word synth banger.

As the song promises “oblivion” and I feel like this blurb from their press release sums it up better than I could:

What surrounds the stars in the sky? Total fucking darkness. Where can you have the most fun? In total fucking darkness. Who’s yer new favourite dance act? Total fucking darkness.

Have a listen below, and get ready to dance.

“Tree of Life” by Art d’Ecco

Recently been super obsessed with the new album (Serene Demon) by Vancouver’s Art d’Ecco and was excited to see there was a video released for the track “Tree of Life” (one of my favs from the record).

Of the song Art says “the words speak for themselves - partnership starts with planting a seed - sometimes we grow together, sometimes we grow apart”.
When I first heard it I was already into the funky bass groove in the song, and then that saxophone solo hit and I almost fell out of my chair.

I cannot wait for the hometown show on Thursday the 12th at the Fox Cabaret - I’m bringing my dancing shoes for sure.

“Mahaha: Tickling Demon” by PIQSIQ

Last week, acclaimed Inuit throat singing duo PIQSIQ released their latest album, Legends, and along with it, new single “Mahaha: Tickling Demon”.

On the new album, sisters Tiffany Ayalik and Inuksuk Mackay present eight songs based around beloved figures from Inuit culture, with Tiffany saying, “We wanted to honour our traditional stories—narratives that are not just entertainment, but fundamental to Inuit identity. These legends have long been how we pass on critical teachings: How to stay safe on the land, how to live in the right relationship with each other, with the animals, and with the spirit world. These are stories of survival, respect, and deep connection to place.”

And Inuksuk adding, “We created visual slideshows for each legend and sourced historic and contemporary Inuit artworks that depicted these beings. While recording, we projected these images in the studio, and then sang to what we saw and felt. It was deeply immersive and visual; we let the visuals guide our vocal responses.”

You can find the album on bandcamp & everywhere else, and listen below to “Mahaha: Tickling Demon” (who “haunts the land and tickles people to death — if you are found frozen with a smile on your face, it was likely the work of Mahaha”).

Songs of the Week: March 24 - 30, 2025

March 31, 2025 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day, Songs Of The Week

“Make Way For Waves” by Amy Millan

Last week Amy Millan shared another tease of her upcoming solo album with the latest song, “Make Way For Waves”

The beautiful, twitchy song was the first collaboration between Millan and the album’s co-writer/co-producer Jay McCarrol (of Nirvana the Band the Show fame), and Amy says:

“This song has a very special place in my heart. It’s the first song Jay and I collaborated on and was initially titled ‘gentle beginnings.’ It is the song that launched our relationship and the making of this album. The first verse was an old Stars demo sitting in a hard drive cemetery. I never forgot it and my attachment to the sentiment of the verse lyrics. I sent what I had to Jay and told him it needed a chorus and obviously a second verse. A few weeks later, he sent the song back completed and with this punch in the gut chorus that made me fall out of my chair. We were off. Lyrically I was seeking to articulate how difficult patches in life can influence you to blow it all up or throw in the towel. I was clinging to the idea that with some patience and reflection maybe calmer waters eventually return like the cycle of the moon. Mourning time passing is a right of passage, and the forlorn can make a beautiful hook. Trying not to let fear find a home in my heart.”

Amy’s new album I Went To Find You comes out May 30 on Last Gang Records, and you can check out the gorgeous hand-drawn animated video by Gaia Alari below!

“Get Dumber” by PUP

My favourite part of the video for this song is when the saxophone lights up a mini saxophone weed pipe.

Honestly I’d love to just leave it at that, but I’ll tell you more about PUP’s new single “Get Dumber”.
The track will appear on the band’s upcoming album Who Will Look After The Dogs? which is out in just over a month on May 2nd.

The song features band bud and collaborator Jeff Rosenstock and has a hilarious story behind it that singer Stefan Babcock relates below:
“I wrote ‘Get Dumber’ in Jeff’s basement. I was house sitting for him while he was on tour. I recorded the first demo for it on his guitar using his mics and his computer. Maybe because the ghost of Jeff was in the room with me, I always imagined our voices on this song together, so I was very happy when he agreed to sing on it.
We recorded the vocals together, in the same room, facing each other. What that means is, we both had to nail it at the same time because we couldn’t really cut between takes. On the first take, he forgot a line in the second verse and said “ahhhhhh, lyrics” instead. I couldn’t finish the take because I was laughing too hard. Anyway, he practiced singing the correct lyrics but then we decided those lyrics kinda sucked and he should just stick to “ahhhh lyrics” because it’s funny and the song is called Get Dumber.”

And, like all PUP videos, this one is worth the watch.

“Take It Easy” by Total Fucking Darkness

Speaking of side projects from members of Stars, Total Fucking Darkness dropped their latest single, a thumping rave anthem antithetically called “Take It Easy”.

And you know what, I love everything about this blurb in the press release, so I want to just copy it verbatim:

Written in real-time, “Take It Easy” was born from pure spite. Torquil Campbell (a man who once played a badger in a cartoon) wrote the lyrics while listening to the track for the first time—a feat that continues to baffle even his bandmates, Stephen Ramsay (tall and just on this side of handsome) and Tom McFall (English studio genius and synthesist whose engineering credits include the likes of REM, Bloc Party, Twin Shadow, Regina Spektor). And then, of course, there are the sheep.

Still no word on an album from the trio, but if you’re in Montreal you can attend the inaugural Total Fucking Darkness party on May 29th at Newspeak.

“Listen2me” by Foxwarren

Having new Foxwarren land in my inbox was unexpected and super exciting!

Foxwarren (which is made up of Andy Shauf, Avery Kissick and Darryl Kissick, Dallas Bryson, and Colin Nealis) announced that their new record, 2, will be released on May 30th!

The first track “Listen2me” had be swaying and bobbing along from the first few notes, and warranted an immediate re-listen (I see the irony with the song title).

In addition to the song, you'll really want to see the video produced for it (created by Winston Hacking) as it involves actual miniature sets and stop-motion animation cut outs!

Songs of the Week: January 27 - February 02, 2025

“Desolation Boys” by Total Fucking Darkness

Total Fucking Darkness is the collaboration of long-time friends Torquil Campbell (of Stars & Memphis fame) and Stephen Ramsay (who you know from Young Galaxy), and now they’re joined by Tom McFall (whose engineering credits include REM, Bloc Party, Twin Shadow, Regina Spektor, among many others).

Last week they dropped their latest song, a twitchy, synth-pop dance number called “Desolation Boys”, and I don’t know if I can describe it any better than the press release:

Written in the final hours of a grueling [72-hour] session, new track, “Desolation Boys” showcases TFD’s menu to thrilling effect: Maximum Creative Violence Immediately. The song features a mix of savant-like lyrical spontaneity and a raw vocal take where Campbell can faintly be heard yelling, “go fuck yourself,” mid-chorus. Who is he instructing? Probably himself.

Check out the ‘Tom's Workout Video Remix’ of “Desolation Boys” below, and they’ve teased some live performances later this year!

“When The Night Feels My Song” ft. Frank Turner by Bedouin Soundclash

Bedouin Soundclash recently announced a new headlining tour across Canada (with a stop here in Vancouver at the Commodore Ballroom on March 22) and with it released reimagining of their hit single “When The Night Feels My Song”.

They enlisted the help of Frank Turner (as well as another version done by The Interrupters, and Jesse Royal) to take the now 20-year-old tune. Of the original Frank says it:“is such a perfect song. It soundtracked many years of my youth, always the last song of the night in the indie clubs I used to haunt, a sweet and sad celebration of life’s journey. To be singing it 20 years later is a joy and an honour.”

“Undone” by Nick Faye

Okay, first of all, I love the artwork for Nick Faye’s new single, “Undone” (which is by Graeme Zirk)

Second of all, who can’t relate* to ills of online dating? Faye wrote the song after being canceled on or ghosted for six out of seven consecutive dates, and elaborates: “Dating can be really fun, and I made some really special memories while getting to know a lot of great people I met online or in person. But sometimes people can be really cruel on the internet or disrespectful towards others' time, attention, and energy. This song was written when I was feeling tired and worn out from a particularly brutal period of online dating.”

Have a listen below!

*if you can’t relate, I don’t want to hear it.

“Golden Hour” by FEATURETTE

Last week Toronto’s FEATURETTE released their third full-length album PANIC PILLS and their first with their newest member Marc Koecher.

To mark this they released the video for the track “Golden Hour”, which was written about a near-death experience lead singer Lexie Jay had in a car accident.
Of the song the band says: “this song lives in those timeless pinnacle moments that flash before your eyes like when one has a near-death experience. Drawn from lived experience, the track starts slowly, luxuriating on the ‘golden hour’ moments you cling to before impact, slowly descending into a faster pace that rips you into reality, going a hundred miles per hour and flooded with adrenaline.”

The video for the track is also remarkable - with the band and DOP Lindsey Blane traveling to Iceland to film on black sand beaches, expansive fjords, and in the culmination of the video - a rave in an ice cave! Check it out.

“Danger Girl” by Shiv and the Carvers

I’m a sucker for a good Scott Pilgrim reference, so I immediately liked the new video from Shiv and the Carvers for their latest tune “Danger Girl”

The song is pop-punk banger, and singer Shiv Scott shares, “Danger Girl is a queer love song about falling in love with a woman that you know is going to break your heart. The “Danger” is the gamble of getting your heart broken, but knowing that it's worth every bit of pain. I was very inspired by Wheatus’ “Teenage Dirtbag”, Blink-182’s “Josie”, and other 90s/2000s songs about women who are out of the singer’s league."

The video features a cameo from Bif Naked, as well as a load of references to (and locations from) both the Scott Pilgrim books and the adaptation film!

Spot them all for yourself, and mark down March 14 for the release of their next EP, Tell Me You Love Me Again.

“PROVE IT!” by Mauvey

Mauvey has announced his brand new EP last week, with the release of his latest single, “PROVE IT!”

Written as a missive to his younger self, Mauvey says: “I wanted to write the answer to a question I've been asked repeatedly since about the second month of the pandemic. The question was, 'If you were face to face with your younger self, how would the conversation go?' It took a while, but ‘PROVE IT!’ is my answer.”

The incredibly catchy alt-pop tune is the latest single off his upcoming EP entitled BEFORE THE ALBUM: A love letter to the moons of Mars., which is out on November 4th

“Him” by TFD (TOTAL FUCKING DARKNESS)

Seems fitting to post this the day after Pet Shop Boys & New Order played in Vancouver. They’re the two bands referenced as influences in the bio of TFD (or TOTAL FUCKING DARKNESS), and I’m sure at least one half of the duo was in attendance.

TFD is the pairing of long-time friends and collaborators Torquil Campbell (Stars) and Stephen Ramsay (Young Galaxy), and their latest single is a dancey, synth-laden track called “Him”.

Check it out below and let the 80s beats wash over you.

“TRENDSETTER” by Snotty Nose Rez Kids ft DillanPonders

SNRK are back with another track, and their second collaboration with DillanPonders. “TRENDSETTER” is a new song on their self-proclaimed “campaign of confidence” post pandemic.

The upbeat track goes well with the duo’s continuing success, including another (their 3rd) Polaris short list noms, and 3 more Western Canadian Music Awards this year as well.

Songs of the Week: August 08 - 14, 2022

August 15, 2022 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

“Retriever” by Braids

Clear your next ten minutes, because you are going to want to just sit back and let the luscious new song from Braids wash over you.

“Retriever” is the group’s first new music since their 2020 album Shadow Offering, which the band describes as “a 9-minute journey track, simple in its sentiment of love and friendship, yet complex in its lush arrangement and textural experimentation. We returned to our roots with this one, exploring new corners of sound, collaboration and a ‘DGAF’ attitude with where we ended up. This song is a trip back to euphoric freedom and lightness during a time of intense isolation. We were happy to travel there, and for you to now dive into it.”

No word yet on a new album from the Montreal trio, but here’s hoping we find out something soon!

  • Kirk

“The TFD” by TOTAL FUCKING DARKNESS

Torquil Campbell has been busy as of late. Even with a new Stars album (and tour) and working on his personalized song commissions, he still had time to team with longtime friend and collaborator Stephen Ramsay (of Young Galaxy) for a brand new band.

Going under the name TOTAL FUCKING DARKNESS (or just TFD), the duo released their debut single “The TFD” last week. The synth-pop jam was written & recorded “in 20 minutes on the verandah of a rich woman's house.”

And how can you not love a song with the stark opening lines: “death to fascism, death to men, death to the politicians and the women who live with them”

“Scattered Ashes” by UWUW

Speaking of new supergroups…
Vocals from Chris A. Cummings aka Marker Starling, and Drew Smith (Bunny, The Bicycles), and a band consisting of Jason Haberman of Dan Mangan and Yeahsun, Jay Anderson of Badge Epoque Ensemble, Biblical and Lammping, and Ian Blurton of Ian Blurton’s Future Now, Change of Heart, and C’mon have joined forces to form UWUW.

UWUW (which is pronounced “you-you”), will have a self-titled debut album out in October of this year, and the first single “Scattered Ashes” is out now. It’s got a jazzy, yet 70s fuzzy rock vibe to it and I’m always in for a good horn section! Check it out below.
