Songs of the Week: February 03 - 09, 2025

February 10, 2025 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day, Songs Of The Week

“Can We Be Still” by Georgia Harmer

Georgia Harmer is back with her first new single since her debut album Stay In Touch in 2022.

“Can We Be Still” is a chill tune that highlights her incredible voice, and Harmer explains the song is “about lifelong best-friendship and striving to protect it from the inevitable changes that come with time. It’s about having a shared vision of the future and a desire to preserve it, to see the plan for ever-lasting closeness through.”

You can watch the video below (directed by Talvi Faustmann at Rosedale Heights School Of The Arts in Toronto) and keep an ear our for more to come!

“10 Feet Tall” by Current Swell

I needed a beachy-vibe track on this cold February morning!

Victoria staple Current Swell is back with a new single, “10 Feet Tall”, from their upcoming EP Peacekeeper.

Of it they say it’s “an anthemic ode to youthful freedom and resilience [that] embodies the unshakable confidence that comes from being surrounded by the right energy and mindset.”

The band is about to head out on tour next month with a stop in Vancouver at the Commodore Ballroom on March 21st and then they’re off to the UK!

“Television, a Ghost in My Head” by Frog Eyes

We’re less than a month away from the new album from Frog Eyes, and getting the latest tease with the lead track, “Television, a Ghost in My Head”

The frenetic song comes with a video shot by singer Carey Mercer of a seal lounging near a ferry dock in Vancouver, with Mercer explaining:

“A ferry harbour is a bit like airport-space: all energies and commerce centered around that which is departing or arriving, but outside of the reductive human conception of the space, there is another galaxy of personalities and endeavours. My buddy the seal was really hamming it up, like they knew I had a record coming out and that I would sit on a rock and capture their silly energies, like they were ready for their close-up, as they say. So I filmed two vids, delighting in the comic energy and the various intrigues and characters floating in and out of my screen, and then sent them to Derek (Janzen - long-time visual collaborator), who sweetly agreed to line them up and place my words at the bottom of the screen.”

Have a watch below, and mark March 7th on your calendars for when new album The Open Up comes out!

“Bang Bang Bang” by Fake Shark

Fake Shark is back with a new one and it’s… a banger.
See what I did there? Because the song is called “Bang Bang Bang”? You get it.

The funky bass, drums and shaker, and call-and-repeat gives me me total Cake vibes and I LOVE IT.

The band say it' “is a song about knowing you’re being talked about behind your back. It’s a helpless feeling, but also kind of freeing. You can find out who are your real people, so in this sense, it’s not a sad song, it’s a positive party song.”

“You Don’t Know Me” by BAWAH

Last week, BAWAH (formerly known as MAUVEY) released the first part of an incredibly ambitious project, MAUVEY TO A BAWAH — a four-part album series, a film series spanning 48 episodes, and a 48-chapter book.

Spanning the entire year, BAWAH will have new releases every week: new music on Fridays, new episodes on Mondays, and new book chapters on Wednesdays.

All 48 songs will tie in to a film episode, woven into a larger narrative that is “as much about reclaiming his past as it is about forging a future”. The film is directed by award-winning Andrew Huculiak (who you may musically know from We Are The City or Big Kill, or theatrically from Violent and Ash) and shot by long-time collaborator Joseph Schweers (Amazing Factory).

You can watch the first episode (titled Push Ups and a Bathroom Mirror) below, as well as listening to “You Don’t Know Me”, the first single from Part One of the series, MAUVEY TO A BAWAH: THE FIRST 13, which is out May 1st.

Songs of the Week: August 19 - 25, 2024

August 26, 2024 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day, Songs Of The Week

“Demons” by The Darcys

Almost missed this announcement from The Darcys, but we have new music (“Demons”) and an album release date September 27th for their new album Rendered Feelings.

Of the new track the band say it is “raw and honest and a bit melancholic, if we're being real. It's about how love sometimes falls apart even when you're doing your best to hold it together. You know you should let go but you're compelled to keep trying to make it work which only makes it harder.”

The band always has the best merch, and aside from pre-ordering the (clear!) vinyl, they’ve got water bottles, sticker sheets and very cozy looking sweaters!

I can’t wait to hear more from the album, get my hands on it soon, and hope there’s a tour announcement on the horizon!

“Let It Rain” by Valley

Toronto’s Valley has dropped their latest single from upcoming album, Water The Flowers, Pray For A Garden.

“Let It Rain” is the fourth single from the upcoming album, and features lovely vocals from the trio, and a plinking piano sounding like raindrops.

Frontman Rob Laska explains “‘Let It Rain’ is a song about change and overcoming. It’s very much dedicated to the band and how it’s been the one constant in our lives through love and loss. To the people we’ve become, to the people we’ve left behind and the people we have yet to meet. Acceptance of growing old and learning to be ok with that is at times a difficult conversation to have with yourself. Being in a band and specifically in the music industry, it can at times feel like a storm hanging over your head symbolizing that it’s too late. Who said you’ve run out of chances? It’s about letting all those feelings come out and taking them for what they are, which often results in you realizing that you have so much life to live ahead of you.”

Check out the lyric video below, and you can grab Water The Flowers, Pray For A Garden when it’s out on August 30.

“Pray For You” by MAUVEY

Last week, MAUVEY announced the third and final instalment of his Before The Album series, Before The Album 3:1, with the afro-fusion “Pray For You”.

The new single is an anthemic tune, with MAUVEY explaining, “Each song on Before The Album 3:1 is an anthem, designed to inspire, celebrate and uplift the listener. Distributing love is my purpose and my goal. “Pray For You” has a no frills message that gets straight to that point.”

You can grab Before The Album 3:1 on October 25th!

“Sweet Surrender” and “Basement Apartment” by Haley Blais

Haley Blais has decided to pay tribute to two of Canada’s best Sarahs, dropping a pair of cover songs last week.

First up is a gorgeous rendition of Sarah McLachlan’s classic “Sweet Surrender”, followed up with the incredibly vulnerable “Basement Apartment” from Sarah Harmer. Blais reflects, “Sarah McLachlan was a huge musical inspiration to me growing up; Sarah Harmer was integral to the journey of Wisecrack. I wanted to pay homage to the two artists that shaped me as the artist I am today.”

You can listen to “Sweet Surrender” and watch a live performance of “Basement Apartment” below!

Songs of the Week: October 10 - 16, 2022

“PROVE IT!” by Mauvey

Mauvey has announced his brand new EP last week, with the release of his latest single, “PROVE IT!”

Written as a missive to his younger self, Mauvey says: “I wanted to write the answer to a question I've been asked repeatedly since about the second month of the pandemic. The question was, 'If you were face to face with your younger self, how would the conversation go?' It took a while, but ‘PROVE IT!’ is my answer.”

The incredibly catchy alt-pop tune is the latest single off his upcoming EP entitled BEFORE THE ALBUM: A love letter to the moons of Mars., which is out on November 4th

“Him” by TFD (TOTAL FUCKING DARKNESS)

Seems fitting to post this the day after Pet Shop Boys & New Order played in Vancouver. They’re the two bands referenced as influences in the bio of TFD (or TOTAL FUCKING DARKNESS), and I’m sure at least one half of the duo was in attendance.

TFD is the pairing of long-time friends and collaborators Torquil Campbell (Stars) and Stephen Ramsay (Young Galaxy), and their latest single is a dancey, synth-laden track called “Him”.

Check it out below and let the 80s beats wash over you.

“TRENDSETTER” by Snotty Nose Rez Kids ft DillanPonders

SNRK are back with another track, and their second collaboration with DillanPonders. “TRENDSETTER” is a new song on their self-proclaimed “campaign of confidence” post pandemic.

The upbeat track goes well with the duo’s continuing success, including another (their 3rd) Polaris short list noms, and 3 more Western Canadian Music Awards this year as well.
