Song of the Day: July 31, 2019 - "Breaking Down" by iskwē

July 31, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Last week we got another tease at the new album, achakosuk, from iskwē. The latest single is “Breaking Down”, and iskwē says it’s about “freeing yourself of a toxic relationship to find your sense of self and your personal strength” but also that there’s a deeper meaning in the song, if you listen closely.

The incredibly powerful (and a little haunting) video is directed by Jessica Lea Fleming, and features dancers of all backgrounds, each representing different communities. Have a look & listen below, make sure you make a note on November 8th to pick up the new album.

Song of the Day: July 30, 2019 - "War On This World" by Jody Glenham

July 30, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It’s been a minute since we heard something new from Jody Glenham, but this past week we got a brand new single from the Vancouver musician!

“War On This World” starts in a slow, dreamy haze but gradually ramps the intensity, all while Jody’s haunting vocals go from timidly asking “What are you feeling?” to indignantly demanding “What are you doing?”

Have a listen below!

Song of the Day: July 29, 2019 - "Bones" by Piper Cole

July 29, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Vancouver musician Piper Cole released her latest album Wildish on July 5th and today’s Song Of The Day was her release “Bones” from back in June (it’s been a busy summer!).

Cole produced her album (with co-producer Dan Klenner) and the video for “Bones” features flamenco dancing as a visual representation of the track’s themes of self-expression and inner oppression.

You can catch Piper next at Trees in Vancouver on August 16th or at Deep Cove Coffee House on October 11th.

Song of the Day: July 28, 2019 - "Italy" by Hawksley Workman

July 28, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Hawksley Workman released this video for the song “Italy” off of his latest album, Median Age Wasteland, and I am kicking myself that I just got around to posting it as a SOTD now!

The track features Amy Milan from STARS, it was produced by Murray A. Lightburn (The Dears), and the video was by Steve Bays (Mounties, Hot Hot Heat) and Siobhan Williams.

If that can’t sell you on a viewing, I don’t know what to tell you!
You can see Hawksley in Vancouver in November on the 17th at The Imperial!

Song of the Day: July 27, 2019 - "The OG" by A Tribe Called Red ft. Black Bear

July 27, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Hello from Squamish, and more specifically, the Constellation Festival!

Kirk and I will be on the grounds tonight enjoying the set by A Tribe Called Red, which will hopefully include this new track that they just released called “The OG” which ft. Black Bear.

The press release says that more news is to come in 2019, which, if we’re getting singles, may suggest a new album to look forward to!

Song of the Day: July 26, 2019 - "The Change" by Rich Aucoin

July 26, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

The other day some of my Rich Aucoin merch arrived, including the album (Release) on vinyl (it’s so pretty!) and because I was so excited, I wanted to share the latest video from it, for his song “The Change” .

He also announced his fall tour schedule, and we have the amazing luck of having him in Vancouver for Halloween!
So if you don’t like making plans, maybe dress up and have a dance party at the Biltmore on October 31st!

Song of the Day: July 25, 2019 - "Dear Leader" by Little Scream

July 25, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Little Scream is about to release her third album, Speed Queen, in October (on the 25th) and we’ve got a new song and video for the opening track “Dear Leader”.

She states that she wanted to use it’s launch to raise awareness for the 1000 Cities campaign - the idea behind which is that if 1000 cities around the world adopt Paris climate accord standards, the world can still meet its global emissions targets.

You get the idea behind the pairing and theme while listening to and reading the lyrics in the video, and it features cameos from The National, Arcade Fire, Superchunk, Holly Miranda, Leif Vollebekk, Mélissa Laveaux, and more.

Tour dates to support the release should be out soon, and hopefully we get more music along with them!

Song of the Day: July 24, 2019 - "Time On Earth" by Hollerado

July 24, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Hollerado have always given us weird or unique music videos and the one for “Time On Earth” is no exception.

I don’t even know where to start with it, I’m just going to suggest you watch it! The band’s final tour (I’m not prepared for this yet) is in full swing, with the summer festival circuit and a fall tour planned.

You can catch them in Vancouver on November 2nd at the Commodore, and I suggest getting a ticket ASAP before it sells out!
