Song of the Day: July 23, 2019 - "Stay In Touch" by Girlfriend Material

July 23, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Big congrats to Toronto supergroup Girlfriend Material on the release of their debut album Cool Car the other week.

The band also released a new song, “Stay In Touch” with lyric video to accompany it. (The car in the video is the same car from the album cover…and speaking of cool cars, you should follow their instagram feed).

The band had their release show at Lee’s Palace in Toronto on the 19th, and I’m hoping that eventually they’ll do a tour and bring a cool car out here (I’m guessing after Hollerado has had their finale, and Tokyo Police Club are done their tours).

Song of the Day: July 21, 2019 - "A Changed Man" by Ben Rogers

July 21, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Apologies in advance, this song is haunting and beautiful, but damn, are you about to get bummed out.

Ben Rogers recently released a video for his song “A Changed Man” from his most recent album Wildfire (which was produced by Dallas Green).

The video is a visual accompaniment to the story Ben is telling in the song about a woman and the struggles and violence with the men in her life. Check it out below, and you can see Ben on tour with City & Colour on November 9th at Pacific Coliseum.

Song of the Day: July 20, 2019 - "Strange Attractor" by Leeroy Stagger

July 20, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Leeroy Stagger must be feeling strange… “Strange Attractor” is his new single from his upcoming album Strange Path!

Funny enough, I just re-watched The Favourite the other day, and the video is influenced by the aesthetic of that film and ones like Marie Antoinette.

He’s going to be coming through Vancouver on October 18th at the Fox Cabaret, about a month after his new album is released on September 13th!

Song of the Day: July 19, 2019 - "Compare" by FRANKIIE

July 19, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I looooove the bass line in this new tune from Vancouver band FRANKIIE - it’s exactly the song I needed this morning.

They’ve just announced their new album, Forget Your Head, and released the track, and lyric video for, “Compare”. I could tell right off the bat the song was about social media and how people present themselves online (authentic or illusion) - and the press release confirmed it.

The band’s new album will be out on September 20th through Paper Bag Records, and I can’t wait for the release show (which we’ll definitely inform you about!).

Song of the Day: July 03, 2019 - "Saint" by Sarah Jickling and Her Good Bad Luck

July 03, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Sarah Jickling has announced her new album (The Family Curse), which will be released on November 8th, and we have a new single and video as well.

”Saint” is the first song off of the new album, which will see her exploring “mental illness within families and intergenerational trauma, and documents her childhood experiences and revelations about her family’s history of bipolar disorder.”

The video for the song has Sarah performing aerial arts, and is emotional and beautiful to watch, especially with the contrast of the tough subject she is covering. Check it out below.

Song of the Day: June 28, 2019 - "Just Walk Away" by Louise Burns

June 28, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

Whatever you think your “summer jam” is, forget about it. Delete it, remove it from all playlists, and never listen to it again, because your NEW ‘song of the summer’ is the latest single from Vancouver’s Louise Burns.

“Just Walk Away” is the first single from her anticipated fourth full-length album Portraits, and is a deceptively upbeat & poppy song with a distinct tropical vibe, hiding what seem like lyrics with a darker edge.

Have a listen for yourself!

Song of the Day: June 25, 2019 - "Part Of You" by Adaline

June 25, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

It’s been a minute since we last heard new music from Adaline, but she just released a brand new song, in advance of an EP called dear illusion coming out later this year.

“Part Of You” is what Adaline does best, an insanely catchy pop song with dark undertones, with a video that touches on themes of body positivity. Adaline says "When I was out looking for wardrobe for the video I got a call from the director. She said, 'you're always draped and covered in photos/videos, but this song is about being exposed. I think you should dance around in your underwear'. She was right, I'm generally quite conservative in what I wear so my initial reaction was fear but I immediately said yes." About body image, she reveals: "I knew it would challenge me in a way that would be incredibly healing. I'm not the first curvy woman in the world to struggle with body love, especially in my younger years. So when life gives a platform and an opportunity to face some past trauma you accept. The song called for vulnerability and I wanted to share that artistically in a very honest way."

Song of the Day: June 24, 2019 - "As The River Flows" by Wallis Bird

June 24, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

I feel like at least once a year at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival, I discover one new artist that I take an immediate shine to, and last year was Wallis Bird (who performed in a workshop with Skye Wallace).

So I was happy to hear new music from the Irish singer, in the form of “As The River Flows”, the first single from her upcoming album Woman.

The song builds in intensity -- musically and lyrically -- and if it’s any indication, the new album is going to be a force of nature.
