Songs of the Week: April 14 - 20, 2025

April 22, 2025 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day, Songs Of The Week

“Crazy Streets” by Ewan Currie

These are the vibes I needed going into this week!

Frontman for The Sheepdogs, Ewan Currie has announced a solo venture and an upcoming album, Strange Vacation, and has put out the first track “Crazy Streets”.

The mellow vibes of both the track and the visualizer below hit exactly right for me this morning. Currie say the song “came from that feeling of being imposed upon by the city I was living in. Life just felt chaotic. You come home expecting to relax and find some solitude, but for me, that wasn’t achievable. It’s sort of a shout-out to big city living.”

“Cat Guy” by Propagandhi

Propagandhi is back with “Cat Guy”, the second single to their upcoming album At Peace.

The sardonic anthem proves the band is an sharp as ever, with frontman Chris Hannah explaining “From my songwriting perspective, the two things I was thinking of was capturing a little bit of Judas Priest’s Firepower LP as if SNFU’s Chi-Pig was writing the lyrics.”

At Peace is out May 2nd, and check out the feline friendly lyric video for “Cat Guy” below!

“Take It To The Limit” (Eagles Cover)
by
Leif Vollebekk and Angie McMahon

I love a good cover song, and especially so when it is a completely reimagined version of the original, and that is exactly what’s going on with this cover of The Eagles song “Take It To The Limit”.

Leif Vollebekk spontaneously recorded the song with Australian singer-songwriter and musician Angie McMahon during his last trip to Oz and I’m glad they did because it’s beautiful.

“A.ajax” by Peach Pact

Last week, Toronto’s Peach Pact released the lead single off their upcoming debut album, Die Hydrated.

“A.ajax” is a punk banger that confronts “society's fixation on status and identity”.

The song also comes with a rad DIY stop-motion video directed by Peach Pact and animated by claymation artist Adrian Venti! You can watch below, and mark June 13 for the release of Die Hydrated.

“GREY RUBBLE - GREEN SHOOTS” by Godspeed You! Black Emperor

Godspeed You! Black Emperor is back!! Last week the band quietly dropped the intense new track, “GREY RUBBLE - GREEN SHOOTS” and announced the new album, NO TITLE AS OF 13 FEBRUARY 2024 28,340 DEAD, which is out October 4th.

The band did not elaborate on the title, but it is likely referencing a new report about the death toll of Palestinians in Gaza. They did, however, say the following when announcing the album:

THE PLAIN TRUTH==
we drifted through it, arguing.
every day a new war crime, every day a flower bloom.
we sat down together and wrote it in one room,
and then sat down in a different room, recording.
NO TITLE= what gestures make sense while tiny bodies fall? what context? what broken melody?
and then a tally and a date to mark a point on the line, the negative process, the growing pile.
the sun setting above beds of ash
while we sat together, arguing.
the old world order barely pretended to care.
this new century will be crueler still.
war is coming.
don’t give up.
pick a side.
hang on.
love.

“Take Me For A Ride” by The Sheepdogs

Somehow I totally missed the announcement from The Sheepdogs of a new album (Paradise Alone - which is out now) and a new single “Take Me For A Ride”.
It’s a fun and catchy track, that sounds like a road trip song from the 70’s!

The band is currently out on a North American tour (you can hop over to Seattle and see them on the 20th), and then are heading to Europe in the fall.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to open the window and play some rock and roll!

“Four Chords” by Dan Mangan

Vancouver’s Dan Mangan has released his Being Elsewhere Mixed CD with all the b-sides and rarities from around the time he was creating the original album.

Today’s lyric video release is for the song “Four Chords”, which also originally played during the credits of the film FLOAT.
And speaking of movies, the video is set to all of the scenes between Wesley and Buttercup from the movie Princess Bride, which is just plain fun.

“a bit of coquitlam” by P:ano

I almost missed this, but a couple weeks ago, Vancouver’s P:ano announced their first new album in nineteen (19) years!!!

Now a quartet of Nicholas Krgovich, Larissa Loyva (of Kellarissa), Julia Chirka and Justin Kellam, the band released the chill single “a bit of coquitlam” as a tease of their upcoming album, ba ba ba.

You can take a listen below to the ode to the city where Krgovich and Loyva met, and mark September 17 on your calendar for the album’s release — as well as Sept 14 for their album release show here in Vancouver at the Cultch!

Songs of the Week: June 14 - 20, 2021

“The Slinfold Loop” by K.D.A.P. (aka Kevin Drew a Picture)

You may know the name Kevin Drew, but you have likely never heard him like this before. Under his latest project, K.D.A.P. (aka Kevin Drew a Picture), Drew secluded himself over the last year and made a brand new album, largely with a smartphone app while walking outdoors in the woods just outside of London.

Influences (out July 16th) is a collection of instrumental songs inspired by, well, his earliest influences, and of the lead single “The Slinfold Loop” Drew says: “We live in a society that’s based on selling yourself back to yourself. It’s created an underground battle to constantly be searching for ‘true identity’. We wanted to create a video presentation that promotes exploring over searching and brings the mystical slide-show of never ending opinion to the forefront of this battle. We used available footage found on the World Wide Web from other artists and cut together a blender of images to tell a love story about continuing to move forward amongst the never ending information of how one is supposed to live.”

“Never Gonna Stop” by BROS

This new tune from Ewan and Shamus Currie (of Sheepdogs fame) from their side project BROS gives off serious Chromeo vibes, and I love it.

Their new album Vol 2, comes out in just under a month and I’m pretty excited to hear more.

“Jealous” by Chromeo

Speaking of Chromeo!

The duo is releasing a new live album, called Date Night, and listening to it has made me miss live shows even more. I highly recommend putting it on and dancing around your living room. Here’s the live version of “Jealous”
