Keys To The Streets - Video #8 ft Holy Hum - “The Rip” (Portishead Cover)

October 21, 2015 by Christine McAvoy in news, Music Video, New Release, music news

For the second year Big Smoke has teamed up with Keys To The Streets to film musicians performing intimate concerts on the public pianos located throughout the city.

While the pianos have gone away for the season, we still have some awesome videos to watch, and reminisce about warmer times.

This video features Andrew Lee of Holy Hum performing on the public piano at Strathcona Community Garden.

Here's what Adam Sharp of Big Smoke has to say about this video:

We met with Andrew Lee of Holy Hum on a warm evening in the beautiful Strathcona Community Garden on one of the final days of this years’ Keys To The Streets program. The city had recently been struck by a storm that brutally rendered a few of our pianos nearly mute including this one, which was restricted to just one octave and a few stray keys on either end. While discussing other options for the shoot with Andrew, he drove down to the garden to assess the damage for himself and an hour or so before we were to meet reported back that he would be able to make it work on the 12-or-so working keys.

On that note, it is my pleasure to introduce this sparse and beautiful version of Portishead’s “The Rip”.

Then & Now IV: October 28th at Wise Hall.

October 16, 2015 by Kirk Hamilton in news, party

Well this is exciting: 3am Revelations is presenting our very first show!

Then & Now is a fundraiser for Megaphone Magazine where a collection of Vancouver musicians gather to play a couple acoustic songs; a "then" song from their past, and a brand spanking new "now" song. In past years people have performed songs written in high school, and songs that have changed the very course of their career (it was after performing at the second Then & Now that Savannah Wellman got the spark to change from the folky Redbird to the "sex-rock" Savvie).

For three years, the show was put together by Devon Lougheed (beekeeper, Altered by Mom, like 8 other bands) but he bailed off to Toronto, so along with Leigh Eldridge, Christine and I have picked up the torch. And this year is going to be so much fun. Aside from a diverse lineup, we will have door prizes & a photobooth, and with a Billboard 100 theme, we're encouraging people to dress inspired by the song that was #1 on the day they were born.

So without further ado, I bring you the 2015 Then & Now lineup!

The Matinée
JP Maurice
Sarah Jickling
Little India
Lovecoast
T. Nile
Jasper Sloan Yip
Kaylee Johnston
The Washboard Union

It all happens October 28 at the Wise Hall. Tickets are only $10 and can be purchased through Eventbright, or at the door, with all proceeds going towards Megaphone. And here is the link to the Facebook event page - post your #1 hit song from your birthday (click here to figure that out) and what you're going to wear!

See you there!
