Song of the Day: April 28, 2019 - "Messed It Up" by Alexandria Maillot

April 28, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

We’ve been getting teases of a new album from Alexandria Maillot in bits and pieces over the last few months, and the latest is a video for “Messed It Up”

Alexandria says "The video is a bit of a concept in itself, where several characters are antagonized by their deepest insecurities, and are tormented by the morally engrained choices they feel compelled to make. For me, it is always extremely satisfying working on creative projects that delve into the human psyche, and we were able to extend this video concept in to several parts that will be released as individual videos throughout the year. The creation process was very collaborative, and we gathered the most talented cast and crew to be a part of the shoot.”

Give it a watch below, and be sure to catch Alexandria play the Railway Club on May 16!

Song of the Day: April 27, 2019 - "Risk" by Metric

April 27, 2019 by Kirk Hamilton in Song Of The Day

In the midst of their cross-Canada tour (an awesome show, with July Talk and Murray A Lightburn opening, by the way) Metric has released a brand new video for “Risk”

The gorgeously shot one-take video directed by Duane Fernandez follows lead singer Emily Haines around a giant warehouse space as she sings.

The song itself “addresses the disorienting speed at which our connections are made and discarded, where our emotional survival depends on dexterous texting, and our ability to communicate collapses outside our devices,” says Emily Haines. “Self-sabotage, defensiveness and cynicism cause things to end before they begin, and the cycle repeats itself. But all is not lost: There’s another way to leave the garden of Eden and I’m inclined to try.”

Song of the Day: April 21, 2019 - "Straight To Hell" by Hollerado

April 21, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

I’m so glad you guys couldn’t see me sobbing at my desk when I watched this video/heard this song for the first time.

ICYMI, Hollerado announced that they will be retiring after this new album and a string of final shows (the Vancouver one is November 2nd at the Commodore Ballroom).

The new video for the latest single from Retaliation Vacation (out June 7th) “Straight To Hell” pays homage to several of their videos from the past. That and the theme behind the song definitely made me tear up. I don’t doubt I’ll be doing a lot of that when it comes to Hollerado over the next few months.

Song of the Day: April 19, 2019 - "I Can't Remember My Name" by Snotty Nose Rez Kids

April 19, 2019 by Christine McAvoy in Song Of The Day

Less than a month until the new Snotty Nose Rez Kids album Trapline is released (May 10th), and we just received another single AND a spectacular video to boot.

“I Can’t Remember My Name”, which also features Shanks Sioux, is an anthem that the band describes like this:
”I Can’t Remember My Name suggests we are lost and don’t understand our position in this new world, but the lyrics tell the opposite. Instead of being consumed by society, we preserve everything that makes us Indigenous by staying true to ourselves through all the bullshit.”

I can’t wait to hear the whole album, and already have May 30th circled on my calendar for their performance at Fortune Sound Club!
